I forgot about this blog.
I won the 6-month long Wednesday league for $50 and a trophy.
I donated the $50 back to the forum with the stipulation hat they award it to someone who wins *both* Sunday games (One NLHE and one mixed game).
Well, I won both Sunday games (I'm better than most of them at Omaha, but I don't really like the game).
The next Wednesday League will be over at the end of this month and I'm in 1st place again with two games left. Unfortunately I'm only 10 points ahead and I won't be playing this Wednesday, so it's very likely that I'll be passed up by one or two players this week due to my absence. That means in two weeks I'll have to substantially better than whoever passes me, which will be tough because anything can happen in poker. It'll be close.
We had a new "Premier" league where we played 8 games for points. The top 8 players played a winner-take-all game for $110, and the bottom 8 played a winner-take-all for $50. It's an interesting idea.
I barely made it into the big game, which we played last Thursday.
I won it. :)

My daughter and I took a ten day trip to CA, and we had a blast.
It was good to come home though.
I had no problems getting back on the chin up routine. Well, it's not a routine, but I do the chin ups.
Poker-wise: Last Sunday I got it all-in-pre-flop with J/J vs A/T and was crippled when he flopped an Ten, then turned another Ten.
I managed to come back but then got it all-in-pre-flop with J/J vs T/T, and he spiked a T to knock me out in 6th. Had I won I'd have been in 2nd with at least twice the chips of anybody below me. Oh well.
It was against my buddy, and he went on to win, so it wasn't all bad.
On Wednesday I won the game. It was also the first game of a series where they count points. The winner will get $50 and 2nd & 3rd somehow split the remaining $50 of the $100 prize pool.
Anyway, it's cool to be in the #1 seat. Tomorrow night I play again, and hope to extend my lead.
I really dislike the scoring structure though. First place gets one point for everybody in the game. Second place gets one point less than that. Third gets one less point, etc. Until the first person out gets 1 point.
That scoring system sucks as it rewards tightwads who can play every game.
In my opinion poker should reward the top finishers, not those who squeak into the final table.
Someone who plays two games and gets middle finishes should *not* have the same score as someone who missed one of those games but got a 1st place in the other.
Top finishes should be top heavy with points.

Updating because I'm bored
My chin ups are going fine. My right elbow was aching a bit, and I thought I might have to quit but the pain went away and I keep doing the chin ups so we'll see.
I'm pretty laid back with the regime, especially since I'll be on vacation for a couple weeks pretty soon.
My girl friend took off for Canada for three weeks, to catch Canada geese and band them for some research project. She'll be flown into a remote camp, with no phone and no Internet. She can use the satellite phone for a few minutes each week.
It sounds like a fun trip despite the fact that there are no showers and someone has to carry a rifle due to the polar bears.
I planned on fishing early today so I set my alarm for 5:45, to get out before sunrise (sunrise was at around 6:30, but there's light at about 5:45) and I woke up at 5:43 so I just stayed up rather than suffer the indignity of hearing that alarm go off.
I tried to catch another trout but I only caught a catfish. I considered switching tactics and going for some bass but I didn't feel like paddling across the lake.
I'm tempted to go back out early tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow I'm going to my in-laws for my father-in-law & my brother-in-law's birthdays. Should be good times.
On Wednesday my daughter and I are flying to Sacramento, where my mother/father/brother will pick us up and drive us to Lake Tahoe for a family reunion.
Then on Saturday we drive to another lake for another family reunion. We'll be at that place a week before driving back to Sacramento and flying home.

A couple weeks ago my father and I did some target practice in his front yard, because we hadn't shot our Henry Big Boys in awhile. I brought a spinner, which is .3/5" thick steel. My .44 Magnum puts some significant dents in it. :)
I brought him some .38 Specials and I got some .44 Specials for myself, but I ran into a weird problem.
Awhile back I sighted my my rifle at just over 55 yards with my .44 Magnum ammunition.
A few weeks ago I shot the Henry and could hit the spinner (4" diameter) every time at about 30 yards.
A week later a friend and her two sons came over and I hit the target no problem at 25 yards while standing.
Well, my father-in-law and I shot at 50 yards, and I couldn't hit the spinner at all!
I wasn't hitting the target or seeing any reaction. I had no idea where the bullet was going.
I decided to shoot about 6" low so I could at least see a puff of dust, and "PANG!" I hit the spinner!
A .44 Special is an under-powered .44 Magnum. I figured that less power meant that the bullet would go lower. It made no sense that it would shoot so much higher than the .44 Magnum. (Remember, I was aiming low because the bullet was going half a foot + over where I was aiming)
Maybe my scope had been bumped or misaligned in some way? IMO, a weaker cartridge should shoot *lower* not higher.
I put some magnums into the gun and they all went where they were supposed to. The bullets went right to where the cross-hairs pointed. What the?!?!
So I put some Specials back in and they shot high again! I had to aim into the dirt. Could my ammo be weird?
Today I Googled the problem and found this: http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258207
That solved the mystery.
To sum it up, the .44 Special shoots substantially slower than the .44 Magnum. Because of this the bullet does *not* leave the barrel before the gun starts to recoil. So the barrel is on its way up before the bullet leaves the muzzle, resulting in a higher shot even though the bullet is under powered compared to a Magnum
I found that really interesting. I wouldn't have thought of that on my own.

Checking in
Well, it hasn't been a year since the update.
I didn't win MVP for season 5 because I had a pretty poor finish. Them's the breaks.
The following season I did even worse. Same situation. People were getting better, and things just didn't go my way.
I'm taking the current season off, and since I'll be on vacation when the new season starts (in a couple weeks) I probably won't play then too.
I do play in the Hold'em Freaks game sometimes. They play at 9:30 on Sundays, and I like the late hours.
Plus they offer a $ prize for first place.
I'm still dating the same woman, though it's more of casual thing now. We're still very good friends. We just know that we have different destinies.
I quit doing the Perfect Pushup routines because of pain in my right elbow. I was going to pick it back up after Machu Picchu but the pain came back. I was really impressed at what it did for my back, pecs, and triceps, but it did very little for my biceps.
I kept kicking around the idea of getting a chin up bar from Walmart. They were $40, but I wasn't sure if they'd fit in anywhere but my closet door because the hallway has a low ceiling due to central air. But then I saw a similar one on DailySteals for $15 so I bought it.
I've been using it off and on for a week and I already feel a difference. I don't look any different, but I'm not as soft under the skin.
I could do three at first, but now I can barely eek out 5. That's still not a lot, but I weigh 200lbs. That's 1,000lbs right? :)
Anyway, I'm not going to follow any regiment like I did with the Perfect Pushup. I have it set in my pantry, and every time I walk by it I do as many as I can. I do let myself skip it if I'm sore or tired. But if I go in there to get a snack, then I always to it.
I spare myelf from doing it if I'm doing laundry, as that's punishment enough. :)
I haven't had any elbow pain yet. I was worried about that. I think it may have been some repetitive stress thing from how I sat and held the mouse.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I haven't been playing much.
I'll play a free Sunday game each week (9:36PM) and I'll play my weekly team game.
We're 33/50 games into the season and my team the PengWins is doing well.
Out of the 45 players in the league, my team has 4 (of 5) in the top dozen. We are sitting in 1, 2, 11, & 12. Yeah, it's a temporary stat, but it's still cool.

If I win MVP again this year, it'll be 5 in a row. Again, nobody else has ever won twice, let alone two in a row.
I enjoy the run, but I'm sort of ready to hand off the title to someone else.
I won't throw a game to do it, but I think someone else will enjoy the title more than I will at this point.
My teammate is right on my tail, so he has a good chance of taking it. That'd be nice.
In non-poker news, I'm still dating the same woman.
She's been taking me hunting, which I really enjoy. I've dragged a dear through the woods and helped process it.
Butchering a deer isn't rocket science. You pretty much just feel out each muscle and cut it out.
Oh, and you cut off all the shiny stuff that coats each muscle.
Today I made a deer burger for lunch, out of a deer that was harvested in my back yard.
It was good!
It was meat that was raised in a humane manor, and is 100% free of hormones and all that other stuff that farmers inject into their livestock.
Harvesting deer also keeps the population down, which is necessary since all wild mountain lions have been eradicated from the state and bears have been eliminated from most places.
In places like Frankfort there are unhealthy numbers of deer because you can't discharge a firearm in city limits. The animals have little food in the winter, and are apt to spread disease to each other.
I've been looking at getting a new rifle and I think I've settled on the Henry .44. It shoots .44 Magnums (a'la Dirty Harry), but without the kick that the .44 Magnum handgun has.
It also shoots .44 Specials, which is just a shorter version of the same bullet.

Machu Picchu
I thought I'd post a few pics from the Machu Picchu backpacking trip.
Our group was composed of 2 guides, and 9 tourists (besides the 10 or so porters who carried all of the tents, food, and equipment).
There were only two or three small tunnels along the 4 day, 3-night trip.
The trails were incredible, especially when you consider that they were first made hundreds of years ago by people who didn't have metal tools.
Of course, the highlight of the trip was Machu Picchu.
I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. I mean, I'd seen several television shows on the site, so I thought it was going to be boring, but there is a huge difference between seeing it and being among the walls.
We had a speech about the site, then we were free to wander around on our own.
Machu Piccho has a visitor center, that has a bus that goes to a small down called Aguas Calientes. From there we took a long train ride to another town, and then a shuttle back to Cuzco.
I had a blast, and I would totally do this trip again.

Long time no see... or poker
I did not join the CardsChat Spring 2011 League. I got a new girlfriend and poker was a much smaller part of my life so I decided not to sign up.
A couple weeks in I missed the one game a week, so I signed up as an alternate.
Poker's Black Friday hit and nuked real money games in the United States, which caused people to drop from the league and I got picked up by a team in middle position.
The team ended up getting 1st place, and I won league MVP for the third season in a row. (Nobody other player has won twice, let alone three times in a row)
I felt obligated to play in the Summer 2011 league, and am doing well in it (3 wins, and 2 2nd places over the 5 games I've played so far).
I made a chart showing my finishes for the individual games over the past 4 seasons:
Those stats are laughably high. 17 first places in 38 games is crazy.
I still have 4 more games to play this season, and one guy is right on my tail, so my good finishes this season by no means lock me for a 4th MVP title.
I'm watching a teammate play a game right now, and the conversation at the table tickled me.
You start with 3,000 chips and 10/20 blinds. Early in the game the conversation went something like this:
DM - I'm so card dead this game. It's frustrating.
SP - You're card dead over what, maybe, 20 hands???
CK - 19!
DM - Ha ha! Yeah, I get frustrated if I don't see K/K or A/A within the first five hands.
CK - If you're so card dead, how come you don't have 2,900 chips?
SP - LOL!
DM had 1,850 chips instead of the 2,900+ chips he'd have if he just folded every hand.
I have a tiny bit of money on Carbon (and a friend generously doubled it) but I just don't have the urge to grind it. I think I have $1,400 or so on Full Tilt that I never expect to see again and I have a few hundred on UltimateBet that I can almost guarantee I'll never see, so building a bankroll on Carbon has lost it's appeal.

March Madness
The Winter League is over. My team (CardSchat) was in the lead going into the final game, but I failed to do well. In my final hand I opened on the button, the SB 3-bet, and I shoved with my Q/Q. He had A/K and failed to pair. However, a 2/3/4/5 came on the board, without the saving 6. Oh well. The Team MVP player ended up winning (he doubled up early to someone who stacked with less than top pair/top kicker. However, I was pretty much a lock for MVP going into this game. (I'd have been a lock, but dmorris68 substituted in for another player so if he got first and I tanked he could have passed me). I won MVP. Boo-ya! Out of 45 players, I was the only person in the top 10 last season to finish in the top 10 this season.
Poker-wise, I'm in a bit of a funk. This week, 3 times I was getting short and shoved an unchallenged pot in late position with a drawing hand (Q/Js and such) and ran into vowels (A/A). On Sunday I had the day free, so I blew $15.50 in a $5.50 rebuy, then $11 in a CC by-in. Then I played a $5.50 CC game and won $35 (I think). But I played a few tiny games, cashing in one and failing in two, and basially finishing the day about even. Non-Poker: Intersting stuff going on. Work is going okay. More hours would be good. I had a promising first date with someone on Saturday. She's really witty, intelligent and seems really stable, but lives farther away than I'd prefer. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. I'm cautiously optimistic. In poker jargon, this person has really good stats on many levels. I have not been doing my push ups as I'm still hurt. I think it's a tendon thing, not a muscle thing. I think I've been sitting weird, and using the mouse with a crooked arm, so it's straining the tendon by my elbow. The pain has been dissipating, but I've decided not to start push ups again until after my backpacking trip this June. The Trip: I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I'll be going on a backpacking trip to Machu Picchu this summer. I'm excited!
The backpacking trip is 4 days, 3 nights. We'll visit other ruins along the way. We'll have guides and porters so it won't be roughing it too much. On Day 4 we arrive at the ruins early, a guide will give us a tour of the ruins, and then we hike down to a bus which takes us to a train which takes us on a loooong train ride back to civilization. The next day we fly back to L.A., and the next day I fly back to KY in the AM. So I'll be traveling a lot. When booking tickets, a trip to Peru from KY had a travel time of 22 hours, and cost a lot. Tickets from L.A. to Peru cost quite a bit less, and had an 11 hour travel time. Tickets from KY to L.A. were *less* than that difference, and had a 6.5 hour trip time. Yeah... do the math. I can travel alone for longer and for more money, or I can travel with my loved ones for less time and for cheaper. I'll fly into L.A. a few days early so I can visit my Mom. Then my brother, father, and I will fly to Peru a few days early so we can adjust to the altitude.

Nom nom nom! I haz all your chippies!

I won a fairly big tournament on Sunday. I played their freeroll on Saturday and went out early, but my fortunes changed soon after. That night (Saturday night) a bunch of us played a "Last Player Standing" game where we put $1 into a pool and whoever finished best in a 90-player S&G kept the pool. Not only did I win the pool, but I won the tournament.
Then, of course, I won the GGE money-added game.
I just floated along at first, taking opportunities as they arose. I IM'd with a buddy who was playing another table and he told me that a good player we know was doing well, so I kept tabs on that guy.
Then I had Q/Q on a K/K/Q flop and stacked a guy who had K/T, which put me in the top 10% of players.
When we were down to 5-6 players the other people were really tight. I stole a lot of pots because nobody wanted to fight back. I became chip leader, with only one guy on my right having enough chips to really hurt me. He was smart too, so I was glad to have position on him.
Position there won me the game. Had he been on my left at that point it would have been a different game. But as it was I could stay out of his way and bully the rest of the table. (Most people don't think about this sort of stuff when talking about wins, but who-sits-where is a big part of the game.)
Eventually it came down the smart guy and I.
I'm goo heads up, but this guy was pretty good as well. There wasn't much for me to exploit.
I was HU forever. 50 minutes! I KO'd the 3'rd place finished at 19:42:56 to put me heads up. Then HU ended at 20:33:39
The game started at 15:00 (but I couldn't get on until 15:14) so that's a 5:34 game where.... what... 15% of the game was heads up. Wow! Patience patience patience.
I had good and bad luck HU. I had two pair a couple times, when the guy turned a flush. But both times the river put the 4-flush on the board to scare us both.
In the final hand *he* had the two pair, but I rivered a set. I shoved, he called, and my tiny chip lead was just enough to end it there.

Good times! I'm playing really well and making some really good reads.
Check out this video I made of me talking to myself last Friday.
And check out this hand history. I typed out a comment, and hit send the second it was called, before the hands were revealed.
I highlighted the important part in red:

Upswing
Hey, it's my brother's birthday. I need to call him.
Anyway...
I've been playing the Hold'em Freaks nightly tournaments. I was running cold and they were playing a lot of non-hold'em games so I took some time off from playing. (The running cold part was the killer) I've been running cold everywhere.
Anyway...
I'm captain of a new team. Honestly, I wasn't able to pick my team so the woman in charge picked for me. She was able to get two of the people who I had last year, and two pretty good rookies, so I am pleased.
Early yesterday we were in 2nd place, 11 games into the season. I don't know where we're at today because we had a low finish, so I'm guessing we're in 3rd (of 9).
I had a lousy 6th (of 9) place finish in my first game but I won Friday's game.

I didn't play any more poker until Sunday, when I won a $200-added game with the best poker forum, CardsChat.

They're giving out some sort of prizes for whoever knocks the most people out (out of two games, the second being played Sunday... but I'll be at my mother-in-law's celebrating her birthday for the second game). One guy finished with 5-KO's to my 4. He and I went heads up (for the 5th time in the past 6 months) and I beat him for the 5th time. :) He's a good player, but predictable.
Yesterday I played one super turbo thing on Ultimate Bet, as I haven't played on the site for months and I wanted to give it a try. I got KO'd in 7th of 9 in a standard SB vs BB play.
Then I played the Hold'em Freaks high hand early game. I paid $1 to be entered into a pool, where the player with the highest hand wins the $. You have to win the showdown and use both of your hole cards to win. I've made the mistake of betting the river with monsters (quads and such) and not getting called, thereby not being eligible for the high hand pool.
Well, yesterday I made a bad bet on the river too:
Fortunately he made an even worse call. :)
So yeah, I won the high hand pool.
Then I went on to get 2nd place in the game. I had 9k, he had 7.5k, and I 3-bet him with 7/7 and he called with Q/T. He rivered the Ten win. I was unable to come back. But 2nd place is good! :)
An hour later was the second high-hand game, and this one was $2 instead of $1.
This coin flip lead to me winning the high hand in that game as well:
Oh... and then I won the tournament:

So I've had quite a streak. One loss on Ultimatebet, and a string of victories.
1st, 1st, fail, 2nd& bonus, and 1st & bonus.

In non-poker news...
I'm getting out of the house more. Even when home, I'm hiking in the woods.
My social life is expanding.
I'm still doing my push ups, but I'm not following the plan. The tendon in my right arm is getting better, but slowly. I don't want to move up to the feet-on-chair push ups for fear of agitating it, so I'm just doing the standard sets. Well, instead of 14/10/6 I'm doing 15/11/7.
I have a new Droid phone with a data plan, so I can hook it to my computer and get 3G on my home computer. :) That's exciting, but I'm afraid that I'll go over the 5Gb limit.

Wrapping up the year
Quite a bit has happened since the last post.
My grandmother passed away a couple weeks before Thanksgiving, so I flew to CA to attend the memorial service with my family. My parents had tickets to fly to KY a few days later, so stayed a few extra days so could share the return flight with them.
Having them here for Thanksgiving and my birthday was nice.
Poker-wise, my team clinched first place the day before the final game. We would have tied if we forfeited somehow (like entering multiple players, or not registering for the game) *and* if the team in 2nd got 1st place that game.
I was #1 in the MVP race (based on average score) and risked my first place status by playing the final game. I only needed a 5th place to keep the title, but I went ahead and won it. :)
My team was composed of half of the top 8 finishers (3 of the top 5). There were 35 players total. We had one other player, who managed a couple big scores (a 2nd & a 3rd) at the end to move up and finish in 34th place.
I'll be a team captain again next season.
I've been running a bit cold lately. I'll be short and make a standard shove with 6/6 in an unchallenged pot from the button or SB, and the button will wake up with A/A. Or someone will limp with Q/9s and I'll shove my 11bb's with 8/9s and they will call.
I had a period where K/K was poison, but then I flopped quads Kings and someone was nice enough to shove with absolute air in an attempt to bluff me off the pot.
But anyway, like I said, right now I'm doing a lot of standard shoves that get called by monsters or hands that were suicidal to call with.
Tonight: Some friends had a wedding anniversary to I helped (with another friend) babysit their kids while they had a night out. I was good to be around babies again, and fun to watch the little runts process things. I had a good time.
When I got home I was bored and played a 9 player S&G, winning it.
When I was short I did shove with 8h/9h in the SB and the BB called with K/4. I paired the flop though, and took down the hand to bust him. That made me chip leader with about 5 left.
I lost the chip lead while heads up, but gained it back. In the final hand I had T/T and he open-shoved with 6/2 off. We were still too deep to bluff like that. I called, he paired the 6, but I won the hand and the game.
Push ups: I'm probably going to be a set short today. Oh well. I have been keeping up with my routing though. I strained a tendon in my right arm so I've been taking it easy and am not doing any of the trickier stuff. I'm just sort of maintaining the same routine I was doing before.

Bling pow
Quickie...
In the team games, yesterday the #1 team got last and we had a middle finish, so we gained ground.
Today we got last and they had a 3rd, so they're even more ahead than at the beginning of the week.
I'm not super-confident about our game tomorrow, but Friday I'll be playing my A-game and hope to even things out.
Actually... honestly... I hope I get heads up with that same guy again, even though he's the biggest threat to my team. It would be a blast.
Exercise:
I started doing push ups today. I've been off about a week so I'm going slow. My back is still a little sore. I'm doing the minimum routine. I completed the first two, but had trouble finishing the third set because I got tired.
I'll do the final set later tonight.

Non-poker
In earlier posts I mentioned that I've been doing the Perfect Push Up routine.
Based on my max, I'm supposed to be doing a 14/10/6 routine. (14 push ups, quick rest, then 10, quick rest, and then 6) However, I decided to start out doing them with my feet on a chair (making them harder) and I kind of pulled something in my back the second day. It's only slight, and I only feel it when doing push ups.
So instead of doing them on a chair I started just doing more. I was doing 18/14/8 and that strain wasn't going away and started getting worse.
A few days ago I decided that I need to stop for awhile and let myself heal. I keep looking at equipment and I'm eager to start again.
I find the push ups to be sort of therapeutic. I like focusing my body and mind 100% on something. It hurts but I'm in control of that pain, so it's nothing. Real pain comes in lack of control.
It's also a good time killer. I do four sets, every-other day, and each set takes two minutes.
So anyway, I'm writing this because I'm sitting in my chair, looking at my Perfect Push Up grips thinking "This is a perfect time to do a set" but I'm forcing myself not to do them.
Oh... I know what I can add. While I have a definite change in my triceps, and some slight change in my shoulders and chest, almost nothing was happening with my biceps. I read up on it and push ups do almost nothing for the biceps. ...but pull ups do. So I've been adding pull ups to my routine.
I use my spiral staircase and do them on days opposite of my push ups. Come to think of it, that might be a contribution to my sore back. It uses a lot of the same upper body and core muscles so I may not be giving my body enough time to recuperate. Tired muscles don't work like they should, which can put strain on other parts, which can lead to injury. So I should probably just do them all on the same day? Maybe?
Anyway, after fighting through it for over a week I gave up a few days ago and probably won't start again until Wednesday, which will be about a week off.
Whine whine whine...
Also, last night I fell asleep on the sofa, which left me with a soar back. ;) I actually slept really well, and I'm sure it'll go away quickly.
It's times like this I wish I had my daughter here to walk on my back.
Back when I was married I didn't ask for back rubs a lot, but this is one of the times when I'd probably ask. I guess single life some disadvantages.
Okay, a little poker...
Last night I played two $4+$.40 Rush tournaments and only cashed in one for $6.75, for a $2.05 loss. Then I played two $2.10 super turbos and cashed in one for $3.60 for a $1.50 loss.
This morning I played a $10.50 knock-out HU tournament (weird) and wont he first round for the $5 bounty, but lost the second when he shoved with 8/5s and I called (still with a big stack) with A/T and he made trips. Had I won that, he'd have been crippled and I'm confident I'd have won. Oh well. So that game was a $5.50 loss. So I'm down $9.05 in tournaments for the last 24 hours.
I have no plans for the day, so I may play a 6-max game that CardsChat is putting on. (Cardschat is the poker forum I'm active in).

Not quite a Rush
For the past nine days I've been playing the Take-2 promotion by getting points at a $25NL Rush table. On Tuesday I lost about 4.5 buy-ins. A buy in is $25. It wasn't fun. I flopped a set of 7's on an A/K/7 board; he had pocket Aces. Twice I flopped top two pair and got rivered by a bigger two pair. One time I got all-in pre-flop with Q\Q in the small blind vs the big blind who had K\K.
That's quite a deficit to come back from.
Today was the last day of the promotion. I finished with a $36.73 deficit. I'll be getting a $25 bonus for completing the promotion, so I'm down $11.73. I also paid $43.66 in rake, which I'll be getting 27% ($11.78) back from my rake-back affiliate (27%). So that means I have a $.05 profit!
I honestly LOL'd when I did the math. :)
If Full Tilt hadn't changed their Rakeback policy I'd have made a $3.78 profit. But oh well.
Team Series:
Once again I am a team captain for the CardsChat league. My teams normally have some pretty back luck, but this season my luck seems to have turned.
There are 9 teams of 5 players, and the games are each weekday. I have the same people playing each day of the week, for simplicity's sake. If we're in contention at the end of the season I might change things around, sitting out some players and giving others more games. Hopefully it won't come to that, but money-wise it's best for all of us. (The top teams get money at the end of the season. It cost us each $5 to play.)

Were in week 3 of the 11 week season, and my team is tied for second place.

Notice how my team name has arrows that mocks the other teams?
Oh... if you'll notice there is an MVP race as well, and soooooooomebody is in the lead. :)
In the three weeks I played, I got 3rd in the first game, 1st in the second game, and 1st in the third game.
That Justfives guy plays Fridays with me. He won the first game, and came in 2nd place the next two. That means I beat him HU twice. We played HU (Heads Up) a lot, and I mean a whole lot!
Yesterdays game:
The entire game yesterday was 145 minutes.
We started HU @ 22:04 and ended at 22:54, so we were HU for 50 minutes!
HU and we had 131 hands.
Last Friday he and I played HU 20 minutes, for 42 hands, and I was raided by a pretty tight friend who told me mid-way through, "I don't know how you're still playing this. I'd have been shoving by now."
Anyway, I think I'm better heads up than the guy I keep tangling with, but in all fairness I've been getting more breaks than him. He is *not* apt to overplay so I have to adjust to that a bit, which makes the game last a bit longer. So I am more active and steal more, and have to wait to cold deck him, while making lay downs I wouldn't normally make.
I think I can read him pretty well. He can probably read me to a degree, but I'm more likely to switch things up.
Yadda yadda yadda... all said and done things went well for me.
Unfortunately, my team had a slow week this week, and #2, #3, & #7 in the MVP race are all on the same team so they have a significant lead.
Anyway, there are 8 weeks to go and weeks 6-9 are worth 1.5x more, and weeks 10 & 11 are worth 2x more. So we've just scratched the surface, but I'm really happy for now.

Post before bed
Blah blah blah. (Posting because I'm bored)
Had a good day. It was a losing day, but it was fulfilling, which is all that counts.
Didn't do much, but billed a lot of people and got those stupid quarterly sales taxes files.
I owe $9 and change this quarter for sales. It's not worth the effort IMO. I am a service based company, and do most sales as either a reimbursed expense with tax already paid.
Oh well. Staying legal.
My brother spent most of last month touring various Caribbean islands, diving with sharks, etc. He made a friend who is moving to Columbia for a year. I guess his "dating" tips business is pretty successful ($3k per weekend).
Poker-wise... I haven't played much.
I'm doing better than breaking even, but I'm not playing any sort of volume.
Full Tilt has a promo starting Friday, so I'll play for fifteen minutes or so for a little over a week to clear that $25 bonus.
It should be a cake walk. Points are doubled, and I need two bonus points (IE, two standard points) for 9/10 days to get the $25. Last time I think I had to get 100 points per day for 7 days to get $50, and I did that by triple-tabling for an hour a day.
I gotta go. I realized that I still owe myself one set on the Perfect Push Up. One set now is 14, then 10, then 6. These will all be with my feet on a chair, doing standard rotation.
It's not as easy as it sounds.
I *should* be on a two day break, but I like the way it hurts, so I went ahead and added an extra day to the schedule. I might do another repeat day.
It does hurt too.
Seriously, I drool and grit my teeth. But it's nice to give 100% physically at something.

Frustration
Tonight...
Several of us played a tournament together.
Things were slow, which is fine.
Then I joined a $50NL ring game as well. Blinds are $.50/$.25. I posted my $.50, then immediately disconnected! I never played another hand in that game because I had connection issues and thought it best not to get involved in anything pricey.
I reconnected, played a few hands in the tournament, then disconnected. Then again. Then again. Etc.
One time a guy with way above average chips opened, I had vowels (A/A) so I re-raised half my stack. Then I disconnected.
When I got back on... evidently he raised me, as I lost. Ugh.
Eventually I just started shoving any semi-decent hand, as I was short on chips and I couldn't count on being connected to play the flop, turn or river.
Of course, as soon as I was out of the game my connection problems ended.
Oh! And about me posting the $.50 and then disconnecting. It ends up everybody folded, so I won the $.25 small blind. :)
Last night...
I played two single table S&G's (super turbos). I won one, and came in 3rd (min-cashing) on the other. That gave me a 100% win rate for the day. I'm happy to end with that.

Hey I'm back
Poker-wise, I had a long cold spell where I'd shove with 9/9-K/K, get called by A/rag, and lose. It got to the point where I just expected it.
I was still profitable, because every once in awhile I'd have a hot streak (when I'd get it in bad and win!) and take the tournament down for a big win. Well... there are $2 games, so the big win is $40, which isn't a lot for the number of hours I put in I guess.
A few days ago I played a $10+$1 tournament on a whim because a friend pointed out that it had a nice layover. They typically had 120-something players, and the top 27 people get a ticket to a freeroll that has $100,000 in prize money. And the top 2,000 players in that (there's a maximum of 10,000 players) move on to another freeroll that offers $250,000 in prize money to the top 5,000 players in a field of at most 20,000 players.
For those unfamiliar with tournaments, most tournaments pay the top 10% of players. It doesn't take a genius to do that math.
Oh, and first place for that final tournament is $20,000 cash and a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4. (I have no use for a Lambo. I'd try to get a cash equivalent.)
So anyway, if you played, the was a ton of extra money up for grabs, and about twice as many people win $ as normal. So it was a sweet deal that I didn't want to pass up.
The game went well. I won a couple coin flips in a row. My 60:40's held a little over half the time. I felt blessed by my better than average luck. I mean, by 50:50's were holding half the time. It was amazing!
I got really lucky at the final table though. Three-handed, I had a cold run of cards and folded to become a very short stack, so I was apt shove at just about any time. Then the two massive chip leaders got all in together. The bigger stack had a weak Ace, an the other guy had a strong Ace (A/6 vs A/J or something like that). The big stack paired his weak kicker to knock out the other guy, thereby netting me almost $50 more.

I played one last night and lost a coin flip, which I don't mind. At least fate didn't screw with me like it screwed with these people:
In non-poker news, my life is weird.
A year and a half since the divorce was official and I remain very much single. Dating just seems like a big hassle messy and I just don't have the desire for that entanglement in my life right now. However, I am making an effort to get out of the house more and be more sociable for my own good and for the good of my daughter.
I had a bad weekend last week. I'm doing well this week though.
I started doing The Perfect Push Up a few weeks ago, and am following the exercise regiment.
This all started when my daughter told me to give her ten push ups (what they do in her karate when the class doesn't pay attention) and I couldn't do 10. That's when I decided that I was pathetic and decided to purchase The Perfect Push Up.
I wanted to get it a few years ago, but Danny Bonaducci was the spokesperson and I just couldn't support their decision to use him.
I started doing push ups before the kit arrived and could do a dozen or so by the time I ordered it and it arrived from Walmart. (They only sell them online, you get them cheaper with price comparison websites as opposed to the regular store, and shipping is only $.95).
On day #1 you see how many push ups you can do in perfect form with the kit. It's more difficult doing them that way, so I could only do about 9 I think. That meant that my program had me do a set of 8, then 6, then 4, then 2, all within two minutes. Then later that day I had to do the same thing with a wider hand positioning (and an opposite twist direction). And still later that day I had to do the same thing with a close hand position and the original twist direction.
You always have at least one day off after exercising.
Yesterday was my final normal day of the program. All sets had my feet on a chair (so I had more weight on my torso), and there were 4 sets total. 4(8+6+4+2) = 80
I had to cheat and get off the chair towards the end of some of the sets but that's what you are supposed to do. I guess it's important to complete them even with less weight.
Anyway, I've noticed results. I don't think I look any different, but when I'm soaping in the shower or feel my arms (especially my triceps) they feel different.
One time I caught myself feeling up my own boobs in the shower. It was an unconscious thing, my unconscious mind looking for medical abnormalities to warn my conscious brain about. But yeah, there's something different going on under my skin.
They're just push ups and I'm not out to sculpt my body or anything. I just wanted to pick up a routine and get some more discipline in my life. I have an unofficial goal of being able to do 50 in a row. I think that will happen in early 2011.
Today was weird.
I've watched some Jersey Shore this season while playing on the computer (none this week) but I had a dream last night that I was on the show, along with some of my cousins and my brother. We were at a beach house on the Jersey Shore. I also remember that the house was built into a Disney theme park, and there were women dressed in Santa's Helpers costumes doing a dance routine on Main Street. I was up at 5:00AM and so was one of the girls (I don't know their names... the toughest one, who doesn't whore it up) we I we watched them, perplexed that it would happen so early in the morning.
Then we were all at Monkey Canyon, climbing the cliffs to jump. I didn't jump. I've only done the 8 or 10' jump there, and we were at the 20' level.
Monkey Canyon is a place in the mountains where I used to go in CA. After a short hike there's a pool of water below some cliffs. People jump offs the cliffs into 6 or 7 feet of water. People have died making jumps from the upper levels of the cliffs.
Then the dream ended.
This morning I was doing computer work when I heard a woman calling for her dog "Puggerson." I helped her look, but only found a long haired gray dog. She said "That's him!"
I just assumed that the dog was a pug. How can you name a dog "Puggerson" and it not be a pug?
Later in the day I watched a video of my state senator wrestle an alleged shoplifter (beef jerky) in the grocery store that he owns: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByzxIgI3IxQ
I'd seen it before, but this time I watched it in the police station, with some cops seeing it for the first time. It was a hoot. :)
I like how they gave commentary, like pointing out how he purposely put himself between alleged thief and the exit.
Tonight has been busy as well. I had a long tea party with my daughter, dinner, and they we played school until her bed time.
I got dressed in my grubby clothes to mow the lawn but then I remembered that the mower is almost empty and I do not have any gasoline left in my gas cans. Oh well. The grass isn't incredibly long, so it can wait.
Saturday: Karate and construction (and food!) at my adopted folk's house (my in-laws).
Sunday: Retest my "set max" for the next push up regiment, and pizza & beer during the Patriots game at a friend's house.

I forgot about this blog
I haven't been doing much in poker. Last year I pretty much used it as a distraction. In 2010 I've cut down the quantity and upped the quality.
I don't follow it, but I looked at the CardsChat leaderboards today. I estimate that I play 1.5 money added games per week on CardsChat. I play the UB game half the time, the Sunday FT game half the time, and occasionally the Friday variety game on FT.
So I figure I've played 35-40 CC games this year.
According to the CC leaderboard I was in-the-money 9 times the first quarter (3 of them 1st places), and in-the-money 4 times since then (getting 1st place two of those times). Thats 5 1st places out of 13 cashes, out of 25-30 games. That ain't a bad run. Totally short term of course, but nice.
Anyway, I have no goals in 2010.

Oops and downs
Played some €10 NLHE yesterday.
I went up a buy-in, then took a break.
I came back and lost three buy-ins. One buy-in because of tilt, two because of bad luck.
I cam back and won two buy-ins.
I quit the day at about even.
Tonight I hit €5 6-max NLHE, and just dominated the table.
The one good guy left, and I'm pretty sure it was because I was causing him a headache.
This was one of my last hands of the game:

I thought the guy had the King or flush and was doing the rope-a-dope on me. I had been pretty aggressive, but the way I played this hand, I figured that he'd only call if he was trying to trap me so I might as well bet big.
I'm glad I was wrong and won a a pot that translates into about $17.
So what am I doing with € anyway?
PokerStars now has Euro games, and for a 2% fee will exchange $ chips for € chips. I wanted to play the new tables, so I transferred $98 into €65 or whatever it was. Now I have a short term goal of turning that into €100, so I'll hit the micro limit games on occasion to build it up.
One I get there, I don't know. I'll probably just leave it there until something interesting comes up.

Euro in trouble
I exchanged some $ for Euros.
I've been tinkering with the PS Euro games. I did really well, because people play dumb.
But today I'm getting killed. The two buy-in profit is gone, and I'm about 2 buy-ins down from where I was. Sick sick stuff.
Like, I'll snap off a bluff...
